I did a lot of research prior to buying these. But honestly, you really don’t know until you get them an begin using them. Some said the soft boxes were hard to put together. I didn’t find this to be the case, read the instructions. I have been a fan of Scott Kelby for some time. I have some of his books and dvd’s. His work was helpful to me in buying these. They seemed expensive to me at first, but once I got them home and began using them, I think they’re well worth the money. Professinal quality. When I bought these they were much less expensive at Amazon than other stores. One reviewer was afraid to buy them at Amazon becasue he thought the lower price meant cheaper light stands. They are very good quality 9′ Manfrotto stands. Enjoy.

These lights are great for studio use and great for indoor on location shoots as well. The softboxes definitely require two sets of hands. I love the remote capability with the skyport remote that fits directly into the hotshoe of your camera. Adjusting the output of the lights and setting up different groups is really simple. The quality of light is fantastic and it also comes with a carrying case for taking this kit on location. Highly recommended!

DON’T BUY THEM FROM AMAZON! You won’t get the stands that come with the kit here. I bought the set from B&H. It’s pretty nice., December 8, 2009

While I generally come to Amazon first for purchases with Amazon Prime, buying this lamp set here was a pretty frustrating experience. They sent me a set that came without the advertised Manfrotto stands. They made me pay to return the first set (with a promise to refund the shipping cost) and sent me a replacement set. The second set also didn’t have the stands. Again, I had to pay upfront for return shipping. They did eventually refund the total shipping costs for both sets, but I had to harass them a bit.

I then bought the set from B&H Photo online. They sent the whole set with free shipping, so I finally got to actually try the lamps out!

I’d say 4 1/2 stars is a more accurate rating:

~The lamps are surprisingly good for the price. The soft boxes are a bit flimsy, but they seem to be holding up well enough.

~The lamps are powerful and easy to set once you figure them out. The buttons are not labeled well, so you have to get to know them.

~The lamps have a modeling lamp, which is a must for fashion and portrait photography, but it isn’t really accurate compared to the actual strobe power. I recommend taking a few sample shots to get the perfect exposure.

~The fans are not too loud and they do a good job of preventing overheating.

~The wireless transmitter works very well. I haven’t tested it at much distance, but I have used it with total success at around 5 feet. (I’ve only used them in-studio so far.) Easy to set up and very reliable.

~The lamps are fast enough for a very sharp portrait of a still model and even a fairly wiggly child.

    ~Excellent color value.

~The stands are not what I was expecting. (After all that trouble to get them, darn it.) Because they are Manfrotto, I was expecting them to be sturdier. They are very light weight and the mechanisms are rather cheesy. They do the job, but I prefer to use other stands that have more weight and are easier to adjust on the fly. (At least I got everything I paid for this time!)

Overall, I’m very happy with these lamps.
